Street Contacting On Umtata's (Mthatha) Town Square. Missionary Stories.

One of the hottest days that I could remember is in February,  the middle of summer in South Africa! Being a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was one of the dreams of my life I fulfilled as I went about with Elders Thompson, Streadbeck, and Danisa doing community service at the medicine dispensary counting pills and putting them in bottles.

The city, Umtata (now Mthatha), was always alive with pedestrian activity in the center of town near the government buildings. We four headed there to do some street contacting to tell any interested passerby that we had a life-changing message to share.

Any and everybody who is anybody passed through that town center in front of the courthouse on business—at least once a week. So of course, it was the best place to open our mouths to the public.

As usual, we four prayed and separated to do our work. We always made sure we remained within earshot of each other, but on this particular day, earshot rules proved challenging to keep. Missionaries follow rules that protect them from things, kidnappings, and scandals in the local area that would cause the locals not to listen or trust them and the Church. The rules also help to keep the Church out of the news in the wrong ways due to the misbehavior of its representatives.

Street contacting was not one of the things I enjoyed doing because of the rejection that usually followed and how public and embarrassing those rejections could become. Being a new missionary at the time, I really did not want to be out there. Cold-calling with faces is what I called it--my face to another person's face who might spit in mine!

Remembering that I was there to share the truths that I had come to know because I loved God, I pressed forward. "Excuse me, sir," I said to a smartly dressed man walking in the courtyard in front of the Courthouse. "I am a missionary from the Church of--"

"I no English," was his brisk reply as he moved on dismissively.

"Excuse me, Sir," I said to the next man near me. "I have a message from the Lord!"

"You are so young to teach me emfana (young man)," the other man laughingly retorted before moving passed me with an incredulous smirk on his face. I hate rejection.

Rejection was not so bad in Umtata (Mthatha). It came so infrequently because of the pleasant nature of the Xhosa people that I learned to look past it. Those who did accept my invitation were not precisely the ones I targeted. Black Americans did not frequent Umtata. I was a novelty. That little bit of celebrity would get attention as the people strained at my message only to get a chance to speak to a Black American.

I recorded their names and weeded them out by inviting them to Church. If they pitched up at Church, we would teach them the message we promised would bring them joy in life. The ones whom we targeted, capable men, I hesitated to pitch on occasion. We were discriminant of whom we tried to actively teach. Such discrimination was not due to any belief that boys, women, or girls would not add value to the Church. We proceeded that way so that we could find men with wives and children who could, as a family unit, explore the Gospel together. That was our goal, families. We targeted men because women tend to be more willing to seek out the missionaries on their own. The best way to get to whole families was through the husband, we determined.

In this mode of discrimination, I found myself when I jolted at a sight. There I stood in a suit in the sweltering hot sun of South Africa when my estranged girlfriend walked up! At least that is who she reminded me of the moment I saw her. I spoke to her.

"Hello," She said. "What are you doing out here?"

"I'm sharing a message about Jesus Christ,” I returned overcoming my amazement. I saw two gentlemen pass by who looked as if they would speak to me, but saw I was engaged with this young woman of marital age and moved on. Frustration began to well up inside of me because this woman made it hard for me to think clearly.

"That is good,' she continued."I too am going about speaking of God and His word."

Deciding to make the best of this I said, "So what church do you belong to?"

"Jehovah’s Witness, I go to the Kingdom Hall"

Yes! I shouted within myself. If I tell her I'm a "Mormon," (though we prefer to be called members of the Church we belong to) she will run away in fear. "Really, I have an older brother in that church? I am a Mormon." She did not move.

“I attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons.” Still, she did not move.

“What church is that?” she returned interrogatively.

She had a smile on her face and she kept the sweat from her eyes with a white kerchief. I thought profoundly of my estranged love and how much I missed her; but also on my mind were the dozens of potential priesthood holders passing me by as I explained things to this woman, who looked like the woman I loved!

Also, Jehovah's Witnesses tended to not appreciate "Mormon" Missionaries in the United States. Apparently, that was not the case in the good old Republic of South Africa, RSA!

For some reason, my companion had not rescued me from this lengthy conversation with the girlfriend look-alike. The rule is if the conversation went too long, the other missionary would come and join the conversation or save the other from mobs, which Elder Thompson had to do several times for me. But he was engaged with someone too!

The purpose of this young woman was to convert me to her beliefs. I could tell after a few minutes. She and others of her faith were in the square competing for proselytes,, and I was the enemy. Her whole purpose was to keep me occupied as the others sought out candidates after she discovered I was in direct competition with her beliefs.

“Elder Johnson," called Elder Thompson finally coming to my aid after the woman left.  "How come you did not end the conversation and move on?" I had moved out of his eyesight during my interview with the South African girlfriend doppelganger.

I shrugged it off, and he never let me too far from his sight again. I think I may have mentioned to him later how much that lady looked like my "waiting for me unofficially" girlfriend. I learned that day that polite conversation is good, unless you are a missionary, and the person you speak to is a replica of the woman whom you left in the States missing severely!

Moroni Saw Me

Moroni Saw MeHope is the essence of faith in things that are true. Through the challenges of life, a young boy journeys for peace, acceptance, and joy. The story is about budding faith that grows into the thriving flowers of hope with the guided hand of the divine. Rodric, the boy, finds challenges that seem constant with the loss of a loved one or the challenge of standing alone.

Longing for a paternal relationship he never gets, Rodric finds his Father in God as he turns to Him for support. He goes through humorous experiences, daring adventures and near-fatal rendezvous all with the same goal in mind, hope in something more, which he finds!

The boy grows into a man dealing with more love and loss and the realities of racism even in the face of religion. Finding faith alone is not enough urges him onward to discipleship as he suffers greatly to refine himself more to become like his Master Jesus Christ.

Experience the passion, the joy, the journey and the hope of one man under the prophetic eye of Moroni, an ancient American prophet who provided the guide that led Rodric to Christ. Hope is the driving force of the human condition to reach for greatness. Will it last? Yes! Reach with him!

Getting Personal With Christianity: Spiritual Apostasy # 8

One of the most depressing things that I recently learned is that one of the youths that I watched grow up and get married in the temple no longer believes in God.

Many people I know over the years that have left the church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for one reason or another. Most of them have left due to transgression--the ones that I know, which includes family members.

Leaving the church is one thing; but denying God...

It is different with this couple that I mention--it is different knowing that one if not both deny God. I did not grow up with these people. It is worse than that; I watched them mature and become beautiful young adults. I participated in ordinances with them and received edification from their testimonies.

It feels like I just discovered that my own child rejected God!

How does that affect me?

The Explanation

At one time, a brief time, I did not believe there was a god. I could not fathom there being one because of the lack of understanding I had of the Plan of Salvation at the time, but I did not know that I lacked knowledge then.

I thought of how cruel it would be for some supreme being, who could be some malevolent beast that watched in amusement while humanity suffered. I was afraid most of the time because I could not come to grips on what to think! I thought or believed many things depending on the mood or book I was reading.

I believed that there were intelligent beings who planted humanity here as a colony and forgot about us through some great cataclysm or maybe they monitored our progress for some unknown purpose for the future.  I later saw an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation where that was the origin of all the humanoid species. I really am a Star Trek Geek! I loved that episode.

I then thought that there was nothing. Evolution happened on this planet and through natural selection, the Homo sapiens beat out all of the other humanoids believed to have inhabited this sphere. I read books and snippets on the web about how the different races evolved, first the Negro, then the Caucasoid and then the Mongoloid.

I trusted the sources of my information and believed that the Asian races were the best of humanity being the youngest form of human evolution. I thought of my own race as the legacy group that evolved from the apes. I am not going to go into the therapy that I had to have after that.

I was confused and believed almost anything, except in a god. That made no sense that some magical being existed. I would prefer a Superman or a Batman to that!

I know how I felt without God in my life. I felt free! I felt free to do anything and be anything! I was the master of my own life and I answered to no person, until...

...until I realized that there were other people out there who controlled my life and that I was the master of nothing

...until I started truly being affected by the racist human origins teachings I had read.

...until I started feeling alone and lost in a sea of philosophies!

Without God in my life, I was my own source of strength or lack thereof.

The Weird Jealousy

I capitulated and began to believe in a supreme manifestation. I sought out spiritualism. I finally settled on Islam, because, I NEEDED to worship something!  I could not live without a god.

After a string of events and manifestations, I was converted back to Christianity and received an undeniable witness that God is alive and well and very much in control of this tiny planet.

One of my issues, my nagging problem was I could not make it without God. It became an issue with me needing God! I would feel like I am cheating life when I prayed to God and received answers to my prayers and divine help in a hard situation. I would dismiss many blessings as coincidence when I was without God in my life, but now, I could not.

I felt ashamed when I prayed over a test or to overcome a hard problem. I was ashamed because when I found God, He answered all, and I mean ALL of my prayers immediately!

Anything I prayed about, I received! I am not talking about getting answers that I can see the Hand of God in if I worked backwards. I would ask for money and I would get money. I asked for my car to start working once, and it started working.

I was ashamed! Other people did not need God like I did, I thought. They could excel with no prayers, which fortified in me that I was the weak legacy chain in human evolution. My ancestors were slaves because of a divine curse I was taught in my Protestant church. I thought little of that until I joined my current church and the priesthood ban was added to that teaching--along with the false teachings that we hedge around it to justify it having happened.

Presently...

The weird jealousy I had when I first converted to God came back! I actually started think again about how I could not live without a god.

I did not think that I was less of a person for that truth, but I did have familiar feelings of mourning. I felt betrayed by the missionaries who taught me for telling me to speak to God for the first time. I could not go back.

I know there is God and I could not un-know it! I could deny it. I could ignore it; but I know it.

I recall once wanting to go back to my without-God-in-my-life days and feeling angry that God was there answering my prayers! I tried, but I could not ignore the fact that He revealed Himself to me and an unmistakable way!

I was jealous of people who did not believe in God. They were in ignorant bliss. I longed for that! Life is some much simpler when there is no purpose to it.

I accept that this life is not all that there is, but sometimes it is so easy to wish that it was. I think of that couple that I saw married in the temple making those promises... I wonder if they ever believed in God.

I wonder that because I tried not to believe in Him. Now that I know He is there I need Him. He is the only One who can help me to continue living my life in a productive way following this life.

I still think sometimes, "What if it is all a great big lie!"

I then remember that no one forced me to talk to God. I went to Him seeking and He revealed Himself to me. I know that I can do things where I can make it so that I cannot feel His Holy Spirit. I can make it so that I cannot hear the answers to my prayers. Heck, if I stop praying I can make it so that I doubt ever having an intimate experience with Him.

I like myself with God in my life though. I hurt that my young friends are no longer believers. They seem happy though. They seem settled. They seem good. I can only pray that they may find Him some way.

I am confident that I will not let go of my faith in Jesus Christ and ever deny my Heavenly Father. I am confident!

I know that it is possible. Cain did it. Judas Iscariot did it. Millions do it. I pray that I will endure to the end. I expect to.

I am a Christian
It has not always been easy to say that I am a Christian because I have not always considered myself one. Doubt has played a large part in questioning what I was supposed to believe as I grew up.

Getting Personal With Christianity: The Good Son

Just in case there are any wonder-ers as I am sure there are, this is not regarding the movie advertised to the right. The Good Son was a good ...

The Easter Cross is Empty

The cross is now empty. God requires of us a sacrifice of service so that we may cover a multitude of sin. God requires us to pray in the name of Christ to Him for our support and that we perform nothing unto Him save we do it with prayer that He would prosper our work.

We are Christians.

We represent a mixture of teachings that go further than the mere claiming His name because of tradition or nationality. Ours is a way of life. We will ever be a giving and serving people.
Though some may claim to be one with us, our very demeanor will betray us to all around us. Though at times we will fall into sin, we are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ's atonement as we go before God the Father in faithful prayer and offer up our sins to him until we are purged of them never to return to us.
This is our calling as the children of Israel and adopted of Christ come together in recognition of our gratitude to our Savior and King who will come. We prepare the world one person at a time, starting with ourselves to receive Jesus Christ as the King of our lives and salvation.
Not only is there a vast number of Christians upon the planet that slowly take Christ's teaching around the world to prepare for his coming, Christ has established once again the full gospel message in its entirety and beauty through priesthood authority as in the days of Moses and the mortal ministry of Christ.
Those who are willing to bear the service of priesthood authority are welcomed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as humble servants to the Lord. Christians with authority to act in the name of Christ, not only by his name alone, but in power by his very hand and authority will join with the world in peace until God can reveal all the truths of his glorious plan with all Christians living and dead--all people of all faiths living and dead--who seek righteousness.

Love One Another

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Truth is Knowable

The cross is empty. Jesus lives and has appeared to many. He still lives and still appears to many.
Though most of us will stand for Him by faith through His Holy Spirit, Jesus rewards Christians with visitations as He sees fit to help with our faith of His triumphant return to rule the world in an era of peace and prosperity not known since the days of Enoch.
Until then. let us be humble and faithful. Let us listen to the voice of his prophets and preachers who teach
His word by the Spirit so that we may discern where He wants each individual Christian in order to properly prepare the World.
We will not all serve in one church or one faith, but we will be led by God through His Holy Spirit to which places to go and in which ears to speak to help all of God's children.
Christ only comes as a thief in the night to those who do not know Him. His servants, those Christians who watch for the signs and live by the principles, will know when He comes and not fear when we are caught up to met Him.
It is the privilege of every true Christian to know Christ and have an assurance of his or her salvation in a mansion in the Kingdoms of heaven. It is the blessing of every Christian to know how to help and love his or her family and neighbors as we learn to help and love ourselves. It is the joy of every Christian and good man and woman on the earth to know that Christ is the Savior because of all the witnesses He provides in records and people.
The Cross is empty and the God of the Earth lives.

Jesus Christ Similitude of Sacrifice

Garden of Gethsemane

Almost 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ was gloriously resurrected and appeared to many men and women as witness of his triumph over death. Not only did he appear to many, but many of the saints were raised from the dead also and appeared to many as a sign to all the world that what Christ taught in his short three-year mortal ministry was true!

Source: Tim
Christ fulfilled the Law of Moses by conquering that great enemy of mankind, sin, by taking all sin upon him as he suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Scapegoat

Just as the ancient priest after the order of Aaron and Levi prepared the proxy scapegoat, the proxy sin offering goat and bullock as a representation of all the sins of the people of the House of Israel in Jerusalem at the temple, Jesus was the proxy scapegoat, sin offering goat and bullock, for all the sins of the people of humankind in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Once he took upon Him those sins, He was prepared to be sacrificed as was the proxy sin offering goat upon the alter of the temple; save He was sacrificed upon the cross at Calvary.
The blood of the sin offering was sprinkled upon the mercy seat in the temple as was Christ's blood dripped from the cross to the ground at Calvary for mercy to the world and bleed from each pore in the Garden.
The bullock's sacrifice and sprinkling was to cleanse the priest performing the ordinance for the people so that he would be pure as was Christ.
He willingly submitted His life as the animals submitted theirs and the priest his in service, because had He not, all humankind would be lost. He was the last official sacrifice authorized by God the Father until the end times in that manner.

The scapegoat was borne off to an uninhabited land after the priest pronounced the sins upon the goat by laying hands upon the head of the goat to separated the sins from the people forever--never to be with them again. Christ also carried the sins of humanity never to return it to us again.
Jehovah told ancient Israel to go to the temple and offer up sacrifice as a sign of his covenant with him or be cut off from the people. This was to be a token of their devotion to him and a sign of his forgiveness as the priests burned the fat from the offerings on the alter as sweet scents to heaven.
Christians are asked to accept Christ's sacrifice and offer up their lives in service unto God as a sweet scent to heaven as they are led by preachers and pastors or be removed from the book of life.
